Duration: Half Day
The Turks, Greeks, Arabs and British all have a part to play in Cypriot history, and their influences can be found throughout this beautiful Mediterranean island – within its architecture, language and cuisine. If you are a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, you will love the food in Cyprus.
The Mediterranean diet is believed to be one of the healthiest in the world and Cypriot food is certainly healthy, delicious and diverse, comprising exciting infusions of Greek, Arabic and English flavours to wet the taste buds. If you are visiting the beautiful coastal town of Paphos during your holiday in Cyprus, some of the best local cuisine can be sampled in Seven Saint Georges Tavern, one of the most popular restaurants in the area.
Aside from the delicious food, one of the highlights of dining in Cyprus is the relaxed and leisurely pace at which meals are eaten, sometimes lasting for hours. If you are looking for an authentic dining experience in a traditional but unique tavern, a meal at Seven Saint Georges Tavern is highly recommended. As well as being able to enjoy some of the freshest and tastiest food on the island, you will also receive a warm welcome from its owners.
There is no set menu here, so every day the cook chooses and prepares dishes based on the freshest produce available that day, enabling him to create diverse and healthy dishes which reflect the changing seasons. Expect to eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, often flavoured with interesting herbs and spices.
Like tapas in Spain, meze is the traditional way of eating in Cyprus, consisting of lots of small meals or appetizers – hot and cold, savoury and spicy. Savour the subtle but delicious flavours, textures and aromas of a variety of interesting dishes, including dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), grilled haloumi (a soft goat’s cheese), keftedhes (meatballs), klephtiko (roasted lamb), stiphado (beef or rabbit stew) and moussaka, a traditional Cypriot dish made with layers of minced meat, aubergines, potatoes and cheese sauce.
Seafood dishes such as octopus, squid, whitebait and tuna are also popular. You can enjoy as many of 20-30 different dishes as a main meal, followed by fresh fruit and washed down with a Cypriot coffee or homemade wine. You certainly won’t leave feeling hungry!
A meal at Seven Saint Georges Tavern is a great introduction to Cypriot delicacies and the true flavours of the island. Just remember that eating meze is a social event and a way of life here, so take your time and enjoy it like the locals do.
