Duration: Half Day

Shopping and Sightseeing in Cyprus Capital - Nicosia Shopping trip

The beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus is steeped in history, dating back thousands of years to the Neolithic Age in 7000 BC. There are many historic cities and archeological sites to explore on the island, but one of the most interesting places to visit is Nicosia, the capital and largest city of Cyprus. Enjoy a day of shopping and sightseeing as you explore both the old and new parts of the city. You will also get the chance to walk along the famous “Green Line” border. This eye-opening excursion is a unique way to gain a glimpse of the capital’s past and present.

When we reach Nicosia (known locally as Lefkosía, or Ledra in ancient times) you will be taken on a short drive around the city centre, giving you the opportunity to see some of the most important landmarks. The main modern commercial centre is surrounded by elegant tree-lined suburbs, but the heart of the city is the Old Town (North Nicosia), which has been extensively renovated. You will have free time to explore this bustling, historic area at your leisure, whilst immersing yourself in the authentic Cypriot culture. Spend time browsing for gifts and souvenirs in the modern shopping malls and colourful markets before relaxing in the sunshine in one of the pavement cafés or local tavernas.

Having been ruled over time by the Lusignans, the Ottomans, the British and the Turks, Nicosia has a rich and turbulent history that dates back to the Bronze Age. The city has been the capital of Cyprus since the 12th century, and is the country’s political, economic and cultural centre. Step back in time as you explore the Old Town, where you will see historic buildings and landmarks from many different eras, including gothic and colonial architecture, Byzantine churches, monasteries, palaces, museums and squares, most of which have been enclosed inside 16th century Venetian stone walls.

This tour will also give you the chance to visit the famous border in the centre (also known as the Green Line), which has divided the Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus from the southern Republic of Cyprus since Turkish forces invaded in1974. Today, Nicosia stands as the only city in Europe to be divided by war. This fascinating tour will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your holiday in Cyprus.
