Negambo Beach Tour - Sri Lanka's Finest Beaches

Duration: Half Day

negambo beach tour - sri lanka's finest beaches

Sri Lanka’s spectacular coastline is dotted with fine sandy beaches and tranquil fishing towns, which are a delight to explore. This tour will take you to the traditional coastal village of Negombo, Sri Lanka's first beach resort. Relax on golden sands, learn about the history of the town and browse the shops for gifts and souvenirs. A visit to Negombo will give you a wonderful insight into Sri Lanka’s unique culture, heritage and natural beauty.

Conveniently located about 7 km from Sri Lanka's International Airport, Negombo is an ideal place to start or end your holiday in Sri Lanka. Many people visit the beach briefly before heading home or onwards to other places, but if you have time to explore, the historic town is also well worth exploring.

Situated at the mouth of a lagoon of the same name, Negombo was once a major trading port for the Portuguese, and later for the Dutch after they took over in the mid 17th century. Their cultural, religious and architectural influences still remain. Aside from colonial architecture, you will notice a large number of ornate Roman Catholic churches and statues of saints in the town, which were built under Portuguese rule. Standing as testament to the Portuguese settlers’ predominantly Catholic faith, it is understandable how Negombo has been nicknamed “Little Rome”.

The town’s main attractions are the 17th century Dutch fort gate and the 100km long Dutch canal system, which was once a supply route to the Dutch administration. Linking Colombo Port to Negambo, the canal is still being used today and is a unique way to see Sri Lanka from a different perspective.

After all that exploring, spend time relaxing on the pristine sands of Negombo Beach, which is often deserted as most tourists only use the town for the first or the last night of their stay in Sri Lanka. Water sports such as windsurfing and diving are available for those who want to explore the alluring waters of the Indian Ocean.

Stroll along the harbour and watch the local fishermen bringing their catch of the day home on old traditional fishing crafts such as the oruwa (outrigger canoe) and catamaran. Seafood such as seer, skipjack, amber-jack, crabs, prawns and lobster is freshly served at restaurants along the seafront the same day, or sold at the local fish market. Try and visit the market if you get the chance, if only to watch the colourful people and soak up the bustling atmosphere.

Many shops and bars come to life when the sun goes down. After relaxing on the beach, why not spend time browsing the local shops for handicrafts, gems, spices and souvenirs before enjoying a delicious meal overlooking the sea – the perfect way to end the day.
