Mount Lavinia - Sri Lanka's Finest Beaches

Duration: Half Day

mount lavinia - sri lanka's finest beaches

Sri Lanka’s coastline is studded with endless palm-lined beaches, which rank amongst the best in the world. Thousands of holiday makers flock here every year to soak up the sun in paradise surroundings. Tranquil bays, natural harbours and turquoise lagoons encircled by coral reefs are just some of the coastal highlights. This tour will take you 12km south of Colombo city to one of its leafy colonial suburbs – the popular beach resort of Mount Lavinia. Enjoy a day of pure relaxation on one of the most beautiful parts of the island.

Famous for its "Golden Mile" of beaches, Mount Lavinia has long enticed visitors and tourists, who come to here to escape the hustle and bustle of Colombo city and breathe in the fresh sea air. This idyllic location is the perfect place to while away the days on pristine, soft white sands and cool down in the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The beach lies alongside a small, wind-swept headland and is dotted with stylish hotels and relaxed cafes, restaurants and bars. Plenty of water sports and beach activities are also available here.

If you can drag yourself away from the beach, the enchanting town of Mount Lavinia is worth a visit if you get the chance. Steeped in history and surrounded by legends, it is an interesting place to explore. To begin with, the name ‘Lavinia’ has an interesting story behind it, reminding the locals of a secret love affair which took place in the 19th century between the British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland and his mistress Lavinia. Their love was forbidden but the Governor used to meet this beautiful, exotic dancer in secret at his holiday house, which was converted into the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel in1895.

Today Mount Lavinia is one of the most respected colonial landmarks in Sri Lanka, and a legacy of Sri Lanka's colonial heritage. The local name for Mount Lavinia today is Galkissa – Kissa reputedly being the obsolete Sinhala word for “rock”. Legend arises once again with the story of shipwrecked treasure being hidden among the rocks here. Boasting history, mystery and natural beauty, Mount Lavinia and its people will undoubtedly captivate you during your holiday in Sri Lanka.
