Sinharaja Rain Forest - Sri Lanka's Natural World Heritage

Duration: Half Day

sinharaja rain forest - sri lanka's natural world heritage

Regarded as a jewel in the Indian Ocean, the beautiful island of Sri Lanka is famous its outstanding natural beauty and spectacular flora and fauna. Spend a day getting close to nature as we tour the famous Sinharaja Rain Forest, one of the most important natural habitats in Sri Lanka and one of the most biologically diversified natural rainforests in the world. If you are an avid nature lover, your holiday in Sri Lanka won’t be complete without a visit to Sinharaja.

Occupying the heart of Sri Lanka’s lowland wet zone, Sinharaja (meaning ‘Lion King’) is the last extensive primary tropical rainforest on the island. This majestic reserve is bordered by the Koskulana Ganga River in the north and the Gin Ganga River in the south and covers an area of approximately 18,899 hectares from east to west.

Sinharaja’s vast expanse and incredible biodiversity makes the rainforest a popular eco-tourism destination, providing wonderful opportunities for trekking and wildlife spotting. In particular, the reserve is a mecca for bird watchers as it hosts 95% of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species. Due to its importance, the forest was deemed an International Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and later designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989.

Look out for the Layard's Parakeet, Ceylon Blue Magpie, White Headed Starling, Red-faced Malkoha, Jungle and Spur Fowl, Ceylon Wood Pigeon, Ceylon Hanging Parrot, Legge's Flowerpecker and many more on your journey. You are also likely to spot many animals in the forest, including deer species such as the Sambhur, Monk Deer and Barking Deer, as well as Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, Golden Palm Civets, Fishing Cats, Badger Mongoose, porcupines, wild boar, giant squirrels and hundreds more mammals, in addition to butterflies, reptiles, rare amphibians and many different types of insects. You may even be lucky enough to spot a leopard – or its tracks, at least.

Trek under the lush green forest canopy, past dense tropical vegetation and across streams, springs, rivers and waterfalls, immersing yourself in the sights, smells and sounds of the virgin jungle. More than 60% of the trees here are indigenous and many of them are considered rare. Your local guide will point out species of interest on the way.

A must for wildlife lovers, this unforgettable tour is a wonderful way to gain a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s beautiful natural treasures in one of the most tranquil places on the island. Just remember to bring your camera and waterproof clothing!
