Yala Safari Tour

Duration: 2 Days

yala safari tour

Spend a day exploring the natural beauty of Yala National park, one of Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife safari destinations. Drive through diverse habitats along Sri Lanka’s beautiful south coast and see some of the island’s most exciting native animals and birds in their natural environment. This overnight safari tour is an exciting addition to your holiday in Sri Lanka.

Your tour will start by driving along the south-eastern coast of Sri Lanka to the Hambantota District in the Southern Province. The main attraction of this area is the spectacular Yala National park, also known as Ruhuna National Park. Covering an area of approximately 1,260 sq.km, Yala is the largest National Park in the country and is renowned for its excellent conservation efforts. This beautiful wildlife reserve is particularly famous for hosting a large number of Asian elephants as well as the world’s highest population of leopards, and it is recognised as being one of the best parks in the world in which to observe and photograph these beautiful creatures in the wild.

Aside from leopards and elephants, other animals you are likely to spot on this exhilarating safari include various deer species, grey langur monkeys, flying foxes, mongoose, sloth bears, wild boars, water buffalo, marine life, crocodiles and many more. The park also hosts a large variety of native and migratory bird species, including flamingo, Indian peafowl, waders, eagles, jungle fowl, terns, peacocks, paradise flycatchers and the endangered black-necked stork.

The diverse habitats within Yula National Park accommodate an incredible amount of wildlife. Although much of the reserve is open parkland and scrubland, many of the animals and birds can be found scattered amongst dense jungle, beaches, rocky outcrops, freshwater lakes, coastal lagoons, watering holes and rivers. The scenery here is strikingly beautiful, particularly along the coast, and there are some fantastic locations for viewing the birds and animals.

The park also boasts a number of impressive cultural ruins, which can be found dotted throughout the reserve. Ancient archeological sites such as the monastic settlement of Situlpahuwa and the Magul Maha Vihara ruins, dating from the 1st century BC, are a fascinating testament to earlier civilizations and religions.

After an overnight stay and breakfast in your hotel in Hambantota, you will spend the following day taking in the sights along the south coast. One of the highlights of the day is Weligama, meaning “Sandy Village'. This quaint fishing town is famous for its stilt fishermen, and is blessed with an idyllic sandy bay.

We will also visit the historical city of Galle, which was once the main port on the island. Here you can explore the town’s magnificent Dutch fort (an UNESCO World Heritage Site) and browse some of Sri Lanka’s oldest markets. Exploring the coastal treasures in this beautiful part of Sri Lanka is a wonderful way to round off this unforgettable trip.
