Wild South

Duration: Full Day

wild south

A holiday in the Seychelles is a holiday in paradise. This full day tour will give you a wonderful insight into the beauty and diversity of the largest and most populated island of this idyllic archipelago, which comprises 115 granitic islands and coral atolls. Mahé offers breathtaking scenery and rare and exotic flora and fauna, combined with unique granite rock landscapes, pristine beaches and alluring crystalline blue waters.

Your day starts by travelling from your hotel to the beautiful Botanical Gardens in the capital Victoria. These lush tropical gardens are over a century old and steeped in history. Here you can gain an insight into some of the Seychelles’ most rare and exotic native species, and also learn about plant conservation. See flourishing fruit trees and approximately 50 different palm species, including all six species of palms found only in the Seychelles. One the most amazing palms is the indigenous Coco de Mer, which produces the largest seeds in the world. You will also find beautiful orchid gardens, spectacular granite boulders and numerous birds, insects, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, fish and even giant tortoises.

Nearby, we will stop and visit the ruins of the abandoned Bel Air Cemetery, the oldest historical site in the Seychelles. Here lies the graves of early settlers and the famous Giant's Tomb, believed to contain the grave of a teenage giant who was over three metres tall. The boy was allegedly poisoned by the local people who feared his height.

Departing from Victoria, we will continue our drive along scenic coastal roads towards Sans Soucis, stopping briefly to take photos along the way, before reaching Mission Lodge. The ancient ruins of this old boarding school for liberated slave children still remain today. The scenery around this area is particularly breathtaking, comprising ocean views and lush, rolling hills and mountains.
We will then travel onwards to the south of the island, where you will stop at Pineapple Studio for a guided tour of the workshop before heading to the exquisite Cap Lazare Nature Reserve − a paradise hideaway. On arrival, you will be welcomed with refreshing tropical fruit juice, followed by a sumptuous Creole buffet on the beautiful private beach.

After lunch, you will get the opportunity to explore the nature reserve, which is set amidst lush vegetation such as coconut palms and banana trees. Discover the beautiful turquoise lagoon, which is abundant with marine life, and relax on the glorious white-sand beach, lined by palms and unique granite rock boulders. A small, replicated Creole-style village with thatched palm roofs can also be found here, as well as the biggest giant land tortoise reserve in the Seychelles.

Before heading back to your hotel, we will stop briefly at a local arts & crafts centre where you can see how the beautiful local crafts are produced.

This tour is an excellent introduction to the flora, landscapes, history and culture of one of the Seychelles most breathtaking islands.
