Vallee De Mai and Anse Lazio

Duration: Full Day

vallee de mai and anse lazio

The beautiful Seychelles archipelago lies scattered like jewels in the heart of the Indian Ocean, approximately 1500km off the east coast of Africa. This idyllic holiday destination is renowned for its 115 paradise islands, which include the only mid-oceanic granitic islands in the world, as well as many beautiful coral atolls. Praslin, the second largest island in the Seychelles, is one of the main inner granitic islands, boasting breathtaking secluded beaches, lush flora and some of the rarest plants and birds in the world. This tour will reveal the island’s most exquisite treasures.

Your tour will begin by travelling deep into the primeval tropical forest of Praslin's legendary Vallee de Mai, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will walk through vanilla and coconut plantations and discover the amazing, indigenous Coco de Mer palm, which grows up to about 35 metres high. This ancient, rare and protected species produces the world's largest seed, which is often referred to as the sea coconut, double coconut, coco fesse or Seychelles nut. General Charles Gordon of Khartoum believed this to be the original site of the Biblical “Garden of Eden”, with the Coco de Mer being its forbidden fruit. The nut is uniquely shaped like a female’s pelvis, which he also identified with Eve.

The coconuts are apparently used locally as an aphrodisiac drink. There are other stories and myths surrounding the mysterious palm, including the belief that its nuts originally grew on a mythical tree at the bottom of the ocean, its seed designed to be dispersed by the sea. It is now known that this nut is too heavy to float, however, unless they are rotted out and hollow.

Even today, as you stroll along the Vallee's well-marked paths under the forest canopy, listening to the calls and songs of rare native birds, it feels as if you may have stumbled into a secret natural realm of mystery and legend. Your guided tour will also reveal some of the exotic species that inhabit this unique forest, including lizards, frogs, snails, insects, chameleons, six species of indigenous palm and the endemic Fruit Pigeon, Seychelles Bulbul and Seychelles Black Parrot, one of the rarest birds in the world.

Praslin is also famous for its pristine white sandy beaches. This memorable excursion will give you an additional option of visiting one of the island’s most breathtaking beaches − Anse Lazio – which has consistently been voted one of the world’s best beaches. Renowned for its glorious soft white sands and calm, clear azure waters, protected by beautiful coral reefs and fringed by lush palms, Takamaka trees and unique pink granite boulders, this is one of the Seychelles most exquisite attractions. Enjoy relaxing in paradise during your holiday in the Seychelles.

An archipelago of 115 islands, the Seychelles offers stunning natural beauty in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Mahe is the country’s largest and most populated island and offers visitors the most options. La Digue is the most serene and untouched, and Praslin, the second-largest island in the chain, is a bit of both: one side of the island offers seclusion while the other side offers a bit more civilization.
