The Seychelles for families

Although the Seychelles is more commonly associated with romantic breaks than family holidays, it actually has a lot of the ingredients you need if you want to keep your little ones happy on a getaway, as well as getting enough relaxation and pampering for yourself.

One of the best things for children to do is to spend time on the beach and the Seychelles is blessed with some absolutely stunning stretches of sand. These are lapped by the clear waters of the Indian Ocean, which are perfect for splashing around in.

Another attraction of the Seychelles is its wonderful wildlife, which will enthral parents and children alike, so make sure you plan some trips to the archipelago's nature reserves during your stay. Add all of this to the water sports on offer and family-friendly resorts and you've got a great place for a family holiday.

Island hopping

If you're visiting the Seychelles with your children, one of the best ways to keep them entertained is to do a bit of island hopping. If you're based on the main isle of Mahe, it's worth visiting Praslin for a day and exploring its outstanding Vallee de Mai National Park.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's home to an area of primeval palm forest - with plants that will have your youngsters conjuring up images of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures as you stroll along the park. There are some beautiful and rare birds that can be found on Praslin, including the black parrot, blue pigeon and the Seychelles kestril. You should also look out for some of the amazing reptiles that live here, such as chameleons, geckos and skinks.

Another island that little ones will love is Curieuse, which is a nature reserve and one of the isles that's completely uninhabited. Head ashore here and you can see giant land tortoises, as well as learn more about their conservation through a breeding programme on the island.

St Anne is another spot worth exploring on your family holiday in the Seychelles, because this forms part of the St Anne Marine National Park, making it perfect for snorkelling. You can see a host of colourful fish and corals just beneath the surface - an experience that will excite everyone in the family.

Family activities in the Seychelles

As well as spending time lounging on the Seychelles' beautiful beaches and exploring the various national parks, there are lots of things to have a go at as a family. Snorkelling is a real must, as it introduces you to the glorious marine world that the Seychelles is famous for.

Older children and parents may also want to have a go at scuba diving, to get an even closer look at the creatures that live beneath the waves. There are several dive centres across the islands that will offer try dives, as well as full courses, so you can experience something truly different as a family.

If you plan your holiday in the Seychelles between May and September, the conditions are ideal for surfing and windsurfing - both great pursuits to try with the kids. You can all have fun learning to control your board or get to grips with a windsurfing sail - who knows, by the end of a week you might be feeling more like a pro.

Should you prefer to stay on dry land, there are some wonderful hiking trails that you can tackle as a family, particularly in the likes of the Morne Seychellois National Park. Another option is horseback riding, which will allow you to cover more ground. Either one is a brilliant way to see a bit more of the Seychelles' nature and to create some fantastic family memories.

Family-friendly resorts in the Seychelles

There are some excellent family-friendly resorts in the Seychelles, which will allow mum and dad to enjoy some downtime while the children are entertained at the kids' club, not to mention offering a host of activities.

It is worth noting, however, that there are several couples-only resorts in the Seychelles, so make sure that the places you're considering are happy to cater for families. For example, Le Meridien Barbarons, situated on the west coast of Mahe, is perfect for parents and kids, thanks to its child-friendly facilities, varied restaurants and (for mum and dad) relaxing spa.

Likewise, the Constance Ephelia on Mahe Island is a great retreat for families heading to the Seychelles, whilst also offering great value for money. It offers fantastic family bungalows close to the beach as well as a host of family-friendly attractions and facilities.
