Grand Baie and the North
Grand Baie is without a doubt the most popular resort in Mauritius. Not so long ago it was a peaceful coastal village, it has now become the holiday capital of Mauritius. The town is located on the north coast of the island and has everything from designer boutiques and craft shops to gourmet restaurants and nightclubs. Grand Baie is the main centre for water sports including, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing and kite-surfing. It is also the starting point for many island excursions, boat trips and dive cruises.
The northern part of Mauritius is famous for its stunning white sand beaches and blue water lagoons. Trou Aux Biches has colourful reefs that can easily be reached from the shore making it popular with snorkelers. This pretty white sandy beach is a great place to relax in the shade of one of the many casuarinas trees. Pereybere has calm waters and plenty of beach activity. Some of the best tourist sights are located in the north including Port Louis, the capital with its bustling market, the charming fishing village of Cap Malheureux, the wildlife of La Nicoliere and the famous Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens.
