Casela Yemen Nature Escapade

Duration: Half Day

casela yemen nature escapade

The paradise island of Mauritius is renowned for its beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons, but tucked away from the coast amongst lush forest and mountain peaks are wildlife havens just waiting to be explored by hikers and nature lovers. This tour will take you to the beautiful Casela Yemen Nature and Leisure Park, which is a wonderful introduction to the island’s native birds and animals during your holiday in Mauritius.

Yemen is a domain located on the West Coast of Mauritius, between the mountains of Tamarin and Les Trois Mammelles. It hosts two of the longest rivers on the island – Rivière Rempart and Tamarin River – and is a haven for all sorts of native wildlife. Comprising 4,500 hectares of parkland, a visit to the Yemen Reserve is like stepping into the middle of the African savannah.

The Casela Nature and Leisure Park occupies an area covering 14 hectares within the reserve. It was originally set up as a bird sanctuary in 1979, and now hosts over 1500 birds and 150 species from five different continents. But it is also now an important habitat for many other animals, including the island’s native Java deer, which was brought over by the Dutch when they came ashore in the 16th century. Mauritian Macaques, wallabies, tigers, lemurs and ostriches also roam free here, as well as monkeys, wild boars, giant tortoises and many other beautiful fauna. Antelopes and zebras were recently introduced to the reserve.

You can now take a walk on the wild side as you stroll with the lions – a unique opportunity not to be missed. Rustic kiosks are scattered throughout the reserve so visitors can enjoy fantastic views of the wildlife, tropical flora and stunning West Coast. There are many opportunities to photograph and interact with the animals here, so it’s a great place for nature lovers and those seeking tranquillity in beautiful surroundings.

Both adults and children will love the Casela Yemen Nature and Leisure Park because there is so much to see and do here. Explore the different terrains and many nature walks throughout the park, which include the challenging Nordic Walk. This is great exercise for all the family. If you would prefer to take it easy, enjoy a 30-minute safari ride through the reserve and get your camera ready for some excellent photo opportunities. It’s just like being in Africa!

The adventurous can go mountain or quad biking, or experience the Rando Fun which involves walking around a circuit of wooden ladders, knot ropes, Nepalese bridges and ziplines, as well as swimming through canyons and under waterfalls. Experienced guides will teach you about the local flora and fauna on the way.

Children will love the Kid’s Corner, Mini Golf area and Petting Farm, where they can interact closely with the animals. You and your family will also get the opportunity to try Tilapias Fishing, a tradition that stretches back through generations of Mauritians. This nature escapade is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of Mauritius’ great outdoors.
