Male City Tour - Glance to Maldives Capital

Duration: Half Day

Male City Tour - Glance to Maldives Capital

Spend a day exploring Malé, the Maldives’ bustling capital, during your holiday in the Maldives, on one of the busiest and most populous islands in the archipelago. This memorable city tour will enable you to soak up the history and culture of the island whilst discovering its many beautiful historic and religious landmarks. Mulee Aage Palace, Esjehi Art Gallery, Jumhoorie Maidan, Grand Friday Mosque and Jumhooree Maidan are just some of the highlights of this vibrant ocean city.

Located on the southern edge of North Malé Atoll, the city of Malé is the Maldives’ commercial centre and seat of government. The island has its own harbour and the international airport is close by, so many tourists flock here every year to make the most of its numerous attractions and excellent shopping. Walking around the city, you can explore most of it within around an hour, but your experienced tour guide will introduce you to some of its most treasured landmarks whilst revealing the history behind each one.

Our first stop is the early 18th century Mulee Aage Palace. This elaborate colonial building was constructed by Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III for his son just before the First World War, but today it is used as the Office of the President of Maldives. Boasting beautiful white carvings, this is a must-see attraction. The palace is conveniently located in front of the Grand Friday mosque, the biggest mosque in the Maldives and another famous city landmark. Completed in 1984, this grand architectural masterpiece boasts a dominant gold dome, beautiful coral engravings and unique minarets, whilst inside lie the tombs of national heroes from the Maldives and various members of royalty. The mosque is part of the famous Islamic Centre, which can accommodate over five thousand worshipers at a time.

Our next stop is the Esjehi Art Gallery, which is located in one of the oldest buildings in Malé on the eastern side of Sultan Park. Dating back to the 1870s, this was originally the home of a nobleman but today it is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of both traditional and contemporary Maldivian arts and crafts. This small building boasts beautifully preserved wooden panels and fine carvings, and houses a good collection of artwork which visitors can buy.

After browsing the displays, we make our way along Malé’s northern waterfront to Jumhooree Maidan. More commonly known as Republic Square, this lush green area is one of the most popular places in the city for social gatherings and relaxation. Sit back and enjoy views of the ocean as the world goes by. This is a great place for people watching! Not to be missed, this diverse tour will give you a fascinating glimpse of Maldivian heritage, culture and modern daily life.
