Male Fish Market Tour - Real Maldives Holidays

It’s always crowded with people buying and selling a variety of fresh produce each day, so soak up the bustling atmosphere as you mingle with the Maldivians. Malé is one of the most populous islands in the Maldives and the busiest place in the country. The city boasts many beautiful historic and religious landmarks, but the markets are often considered the biggest attraction for visitors. Located on Malé’s waterfront near Republic Square, the main market area is the hub of commercial activities, packed full of shoppers, stall holders and fishermen everywhere you turn.

This is where ‘dhonis’ (traditional fishing boats) come from all corners of the country to unload a fantastic selection of goods collected from various Maldivian atolls. You will find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to dried fish, oil, coconuts, nuts, homemade pickles, spices, jams and much more besides, so shoppers are certainly spoilt for choice. Soak up the sights sounds and smells as you browse the individual stalls – this is all part of the experience.

One of the most exciting places to visit is Malé Fish Market during the afternoon. The pace of activitiy picks up rapidly during this time when the local fishermen start sailing back into the harbour with their daily catch. This is taken across the road to the open-sided market where different fish species – mainly tuna, bonito and swordfish – are quickly laid out on the tiled floors. You can’t do much about the smell but the market is fortunately washed down with disinfectant every day and kept scrupulously clean. It soon fills up with locals coming in to buy fresh fish for their families. The moment the fish are put out on display, people snap them up.

The Maldives is known for its relaxed pace of life but you wouldn’t think it here. Hundreds of visitors and luxury resort chefs compete here for the tastiest produce at the lowest prices just like any other fish market. If you can see beyond the crowds, don’t forget to stop and watch the fishermen as they speedily clean and cut their fish – this is an art form in itself! Whether you return to your hotel exhilarated or exhausted, a visit to Malé Fish Market is an experience you certainly won’t forget.
