The warm tropical waters surrounding the beautiful Maldives archipelago are teeming with marine life, which makes it an excellent fishing destination. Fishing is one of the country’s main industries and is essential for its economy, providing jobs for most of the local people. It is also a popular activity for visitors on holiday in the Maldives, who have a selection of exciting fishing tours to choose from. Whether you take a trip during the day or night, expect an exhilarating adventure at sea.

One of the best times to go fishing is early in the morning, when the weather is often good and fish are plentiful. Who knows what you will catch. Travel by ‘Dhoni’, a traditional Maldivian fishing boat, out onto the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean as the sun rises. Wait for a bite and prepare to wrestle with whatever you catch at the end of your line. Typical fish species in these waters include dogtooth tuna, yellow-fin tuna, barracuda, wahoo, jack, dolphin fish, rainbow runners, red snapper, sailfish, grouper, giant trevally, dorado, marlin and many more.

Most Maldivian fisherman use what is known as the “pole and line” method, where barbless hooks are attached to the end of a line hanging from a long bamboo pole. Bait is thrown into the water around the schools of fish, bringing them close to the Dhoni. You and your fellow fishermen will then throw your lines and wait for a bite.

Different types of fishing in the Maldives include trolling, reef casting and fly fishing. The species of fish you catch will depend on your choice of tour and the time of day. There’s nothing like the taste of grilled, freshly caught fish, especially if you have caught it yourself. Big game fish are subject to the ‘tag and release’ policy, however, so you’ll have to get your camera out and capture the memories instead!

You may prefer to take a night fishing tour, which often provides more excitement and adventure as you sail out into the darkness after witnessing a breathtaking sunset. Relax and enjoy the stillness of the ocean at night, whilst watching the stars and moon shining brightly above you. Your boat will anchor at one of the many Maldives Atolls, and lines can then be dropped over the edge into the reef waters. The majority of fish will be asleep at night, but certain species such as emperors, jacks, squirrel fish, groupers, snappers and other reef fishes are likely to be caught at this time.

Bait fish, weights, lines and hooks are all provided on the trip, and well-trained and experienced staff will accompany you on the journey, answering any questions you may have and ensuring you have plenty of fun. This unforgettable trip is a must for fishing enthusiasts.
