Located on the west coast of India, Goa is renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches, which is one of the main attractions for tourists visiting India’s smallest state. However, if you want to venture off the beaten track, Goa has some fantastic countryside to explore. The impressive Dudhsagar Waterfalls are situated on the Goa-Karnataka border and are a must-see during your holiday in Goa. Meaning “Sea of Milk” in native Konkani, this four-tiered waterfall lies at the headwater of the Mandovi River. Some believe the name refers to a local legend about a princess who covered her modesty from a passing prince by pouring a jug of milk into the lake she was bathing in to cloud the waters. From a distance, the water flowing down the sides of the mountain appear like milky streams.

Dudhsagar is the highest waterfall in Goa and the fifth highest waterfall in India. It is also one of the most powerful waterfalls in India during monsoon season, when visitors can witness the water cascading 2000 feet in large volumes down a near-vertical cliff to the rugged mountains of the Western Ghats. This is one of Goa’s most spectacular natural phenomena.

Aside from the natural beauty of the Dudhsagar Waterfalls, visitors are drawn to the area for hiking and swimming opportunities. The adventurous and sure-footed can climb up to the head of the waterfalls along winding mountain trails; climbing rocks and boulders and trekking through bushes and plummeting water. This tough trek is certainly worth the effort once you reach the top. You will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the waterfalls from a different angle, as well as its intersecting streams, surrounding lush green tropical forest, mountains and valleys. The mystical natural beauty of the area will captivate you. For those who would rather stay at the bottom of the waterfall, relax and swim in the crystal clear pools or enjoy a picnic lunch. The idyllic scenery has made Dudhsagar a popular picnic site for visitors.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls is also one of Goa’s most important ecosystems. The area hosts an abundance of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, butterflies, aquatic life and rich flora, so nature lovers will be in their element. This scenic countryside tour is a wonderful addition to your Goa holiday.
