Spice and Shopping

Duration: Full Day

spice and shopping

Enjoy a fascinating day exploring the modern, traditional and exotic highlights of West India during your holiday in Goa. This full day tour will enable you to learn about some of Goa’s most important industries, including cashew nut processing, spice farming and local crafts, all of which will reveal the important work and skills of the local people. You will also get the chance to browse some of Goa’s best shops and markets.

Our first stop of the day is a visit to a small cashew nut factory, where you can witness the processing of one of Goa’s most important crops. This guided tour will highlight the amount of hard work done manually by local women, which involves steam roasting, shelling, roasting, peeling, grading and packing the cashew nuts. You will be able to make purchases at the end of the tour.

Next we will visit one of Goa’s local spice plantations in the region of Ponda. Goa's dense forested areas and warm climate offer ideal conditions in which to grow a great variety of aromatic spices, which are liberally used in the local cuisine. Spice farms are now a popular attraction for tourists who wish to experience more of Goa besides its beautiful beaches. The plantations are managed by people who have an in-depth knowledge of farming spices and herbs.

This educational tour will teach you all about the different spices, their properties and homeopathic benefits, as well as the organic methods used for cultivation and farming. Some of the main spices produced in the spice plantations include black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, chillies, and coriander. Cashew nuts, betel nut palms and tropical fruits such as bananas, custard apples, papaya, pineapple and citrus fruits are also grown here. Before we leave, a delicious Goan lunch will be served to you on a banana leaf.

We then continue onwards to Panaji (otherwise known as Panjim), the state's capital and one of the best shopping destinations in Goa. Browse the many shops and colourful markets, which are filled with local handicrafts, delicious cuisine, sacks of aromatic spices, tropical fruits and many other exotic items. Soak up the bustling atmosphere and the unforgettable sights and smells. Goa’s markets attract tourists from all over the world, so this is an experience not to be missed.

Before the day ends, we will also visit the Cottage Industries Exhibition, which aims to promote crafts made by local artisans. You can find a wide range of beautiful items here, including woven goods, jewellery, pottery and furniture, all made from natural resources such as terracotta, shell, jute and bamboo. A must for every traveller, this tour is a wonderful way to experience an exotic blend of Goa’s culture, food, crafts, colours and aromas in a day.
