BEST OF BEACH, BERG, BATTLEFIELDS AND BUSH TOUR
South Africa is one of the most diverse countries in the world, a place where you will find exotic combinations of landscape, people, history and culture that offer the traveller a totally unique experience.
From the pristine beaches of Durban and the majestic Drakensberg, to the historic battlefields combined with thrilling wildlife safaris in Northern Kwa-zulu Natal and the beautiful iSimangaliso Wetland Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, this fascinating South African self-drive expedition is a journey of a lifetime. It's a trip that combines the natural beauty, cultural diversity and African wildlife experiences in abundance.
Start off with a few relaxing night by sea in Umhlanga, then head out to the Drakensberg across the majestic Midlands Meander and go hiking and horse-riding. Discover the Battlefields of Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and Spioenkop and enjoy an amazing KwaZulu-Natal Big 5 safari in the exclusive Leopard Mountain Game Reserve. Visit the World Heritage site of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and you will truly see all the magic and diversity South Africa has to offer.
Day 1 - Departure from the UK
Day 2 & 3 - Arrival Johannesburg / Cape Town Airport - flight to Durban Airport Umhlanga
Upon arrival in Johannesburg/Cape Town you will be greeted by one of our local representatives who will hand over and explain all your travel documents to you. You will then be escorted to your domestic flight departure point for your flight to Durban airport. On arrival in Durban, collect your hired car and set off to Umhlanga. Umhlanga is just a 20 minutes' drive north of Durban, and is the coastal playground of the jetset, boasting a wondrous promenade, pavement cafes and an addictively cool, laid back feel.
Warmed by the Indian Ocean, Umhlanga sizzles in summer and has wonderfully mild winters, but it owes its reputation as a hot spot to far more than its magnificent climate.
Inland from Umhlanga, endless fields of sugarcane give way to the undulating landscape of the Valley of 1000 Hills, the massive Inanda Dam and the mystical hidden valleys of Zululand.
Gateway Shopping Centre, one of the biggest shopping centres in the country, means that, whilst staying in Umhlanga, one has little reason to venture elsewhere. The O'Connor promenade that stretches from Durban View Park all the way to Breakers and the start of the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve, provides a wonderful way to stretch one's legs right at the sea, past the famous Umhlanga Lighthouse, and numerous excellent restaurants pose only the dilemma of which to choose for dinner.
For the next two days you are free to explore the sights and sounds of this beautiful coastal town.
You will spend 2 nights at Zeranka Lodge on Bed and Breakfast basis.
Travelling distance: approx. 15 km, driving time approx. 15 minutes
Day 4 & 5 - Umhlanga to Drakensberg
After breakfast, head out of Umhlanga inland through the Midlands Meander for a two-hour and 30 minute scenic drive through rolling hills and lush countryside en route to the Drakensberg Mountains.
Breathe again. Fill your lungs with the crispness of the fresh mountain air, clear your mind and unwind surrounded by the beautiful scenery. Rejuvenate your spirit. Experience the magnificent and ancient Drakensberg, a world heritage site.
Your accommodation is situated in the Champagne valley of the central Drakensberg, just below the three highest peaks in South Africa. Mafadi (highest at 3450m); Injisuthi Dome (second highest at 3410m) and the majestic Champagne Castle (third highest at 3377m).
For the next two days you are free to explore and traverse this beautiful world heritage site.
You will spend 2 nights at Ardmore Guest Farm on Bed and Breakfast Basis
Travelling distance: approx. 240 km, driving time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Day 6 & 7 - Drakensberg to Dundee
Today you will leave the scenery of the Drakensberg behind for a short drive to Dundee and the historical Battlefields of South Africa.
Dundee is the perfect place from which to explore the Battlefields of Northern Kwazulu-Natal. Famous Battlesites located within a maximum of two hours drive from Dundee include Isandlwana, Rorke's, Drift, Blood River, Talana, Ladysmith and Spieonkop - all perfect for a day trip!
There are a number of things to do in and around Dundee from Battlefield sites to Game Viewing and from Museums to Gift & Decor Shops, there is something for everyone ... even the sporty members of the family can enjoy a round of golf, an hour or two fishing or a take a run through the farmlands and enjoy the fresh country air.
Zulu wars, Shaka, Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, Colenso, Spioenkop, Ladysmith, Dundee, Churchill, Blood River, Cetshwayo, Boers ... these are some of the terms which are associated with the internationally renowned KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields area of South Africa.
Walk in the footsteps of famous military strategists - Shaka, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha - they were all part of the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields. The wind sighs and whispers the secrets and sorrows of great battles, made visible by lone forts and small graveyards on these undulating landscapes ringed with rocky outcrops.
The legacy of our Zulu Kingdom's critical, blood-soaked conflicts today lives peacefully - reconciled in this fascinating region's myriad Battlefield sites, historic towns, national monuments and museums - and in HQs of the British regiments who make a 'pilgrimage' to these fields of bravery and supreme sacrifice.
You have two days to explore and absorb the history of these famous battles sites.
You will spend 2 nights at Sneezewood Farm on Bed and Breakfast Basis.
Travelling distance: approx. 150 km, driving time approx. 1 hour 45 minutes.
Day 8 & 9 - Dundee to Leopard Mountain Game Reserve (Hluhluwe)

The Estuary is home to Hippo's that frequent the streets at night in search of greener pastures and Nile Crocodiles that may be observed basking in the sun.
