Admire Central America's largest lakes, climb active volcanoes and discover the rich fabric of a colourful multiethnic society

Nicaragua

Discover Central America's largest nation, home to the largest lake in the region and the only one in the world to have freshwater sharks swimming beneath its calm, sparkling waters. Come and mingle with the friendly locals, listen to the villagers' candid stories and learn about their undying passion for poetry and revolution. Stay in a volcanic island that sits right in the middle of a vast lake...where else in the world could it get any more exciting?

Introducing Nicaragua

A peculiar multiethnic society and naturally rich country considered a biodiversity hotspot in Mesoamerica, Nicaragua is often dubbed the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes", and with good reason too. It boasts two great lakes, the Managua (named after the capital city where it's situated) and Cocibolca, (officially named Lake Nicaragua). The country is also home to the magnificent Concepcion volcano, which majestically rises out of the silvery serenity of the lake.

Fifteen years after the Contra War ended, Nicaragua has been left as one of the safest, most politically stable countries in the Americas with a growing economy and a booming tourism industry that's slowly blossoming and attracting more travellers. From the incredible mixture of cultural traditions that have resulted in richly diverse art and literature, to the active volcanoes, the rich biodiversity, the warm tropical climate and the inviting beaches, Nicaragua is one emerging tourist destination that is climbing higher and higher on travellers' bucket list of places not to miss.

Hike, explore and discover unique ecosystems

Lying a few degrees north of the Equator, Nicaragua is a tropical country with diverse geography that can be divided into three main zones: the Caribbean lowlands, the Pacific lowlands and the wet, cooler central highlands. The country's two largest freshwater lakes are on the Pacific side, surrounded by fertile plains with fertile soil that's enriched by volcanic ash.

During your holiday to Nicaragua you can truly be at one with nature. As a matter of fact, discovering the country's green landscapes is one of the destination's most sought-after attractions. Visit the mountainous coffee region of Matagalpa to see how they grow their organic, eco-friendly coffee beans or hike up the active and dormant volcanoes to see an amazing natural spectacle, swim in crater lakes and discover amazing trails.

Surf the waves and relax or take the time to absorb the culture

With the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, in Nicaragua you can get two totally different beach experiences. Many experienced surfers head to Nicaragua's Pacific coast to find some of the greatest waves, ranked as one of the top five best in the world. The indigenous-owned hills of the Caribbean coast can be witnessed from the white sands of a wild and secluded beach that on an ordinary day you may have all to yourself. But what's so great about Nicaragua's Caribbean beaches is that they're not only virtually deserted but its surroundings are also full of culture and pulsating rhythms.

When it comes to culture, Nicaragua is overflowing with it. From the colonial appeal of cities like Granada and Leon, to the charm of its capital, Managua, Nicaragua has a riveting culture and an impressive architecture to go with it. Admire Leon's churches and museums, look over colonial Granada while standing atop the Concepcion volcano and spot the tiny tropical islets below.

The land of some of the most highly praised poets in Latin America, you can learn about its literary riches during a tour of its solemn capital. Attend a special festival or traditional event to add a special touch to your holiday and make your trip really memorable. There are very few places on earth that still remain so raw and beautiful yet so untouched.
