The newest town in Saint Lucia, Gros Islet is a special little place that has been recently promoted from a village to a town. It is the location of the Beausejour Cricket Grounds where both One Day International and Test Cricket is played. Its rapid growth is due to the town having been host to big events as parts of the 2007 Cricket World Cup and 2010 ICC World Twenty20 where played there. It is the administrative centre of the Gros Island Quarter, a region of Saint Lucia which includes the island's northernmost point, Cap Point.
A community with a long history of being a Roman Catholic parish as its first priest settled here in 1749, it has a small beach at Gros Islet, but there are larger beaches and several large tourists resorts within walking distance to the north. Heading south, past the marina, the main beach on the west coast is Reduit Beach. The beaches on the east coast are exposed to the Atlantic wind, but are still largely untouched. Rodney Bay Marina is located to the south and becomes a hub of activity when the Atlantic Ralley for Cruisers (ARC) finishes there in December. Beausejour Cricket Stadium is situated just outside of Gros Islet and was a venue for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
