Union Nature Trail and Mini-Zoo - St Lucia Natural Beauty

The volcanic island of St Lucia is blessed with some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the Caribbean. Dramatic mountain peaks, lush tropical rainforests, fine sandy beaches and crystalline azure waters are just some of the highlights you can expect. One of the best ways to appreciate St Lucia’s natural treasures is to explore on foot, and a variety of exciting, well paved nature trails are available across the island. This scenic half-day tour will take you along the beautiful Union Trail to observe the enchanting wildlife of the forest before visiting Union Mini Zoo to see yet more endemic creatures.

Starting from the Visitor Centre, the Union Nature Trail will take you on a 45-minute hike along a picturesque looped path, through tropical dry forest which is inhabited by an abundance of native birds, trees and other wildlife. This land has been owned and managed by the Forestry Department since 1960, who have since built a hillside trail, a garden trail and a medicinal garden as part of an important ecotourism project.

Many native bird species can be spotted along the trail, including humming birds, warblers and finches, so bird watchers will be in their element. Your naturalist guide will also point out a wide variety of indigenous and exotic plants and trees on the way, including teak, mahogany and Blue Mahoe, which have been introduced to enhance the forest.

The half-mile Garden Trail will lead you through a medicinal herb garden, where you can discover the important uses of a variety of different herbs, which have been used as alternative therapies for centuries. At the end of the trail you will come to a mini zoo, where you can see a variety of native creatures such as the rare St. Lucia Parrot; the striking, blue-headed "jaquot"(parrot), the Lucia Iguana and the Agouti, as well as Green Monkeys, Red-eared Terrapins and the St. Lucia Boa Constrictor, which can grow up to 14 feet in length.

You will eventually arrive back at the Visitor Centre, where you will be provided with a wealth of fascinating information on the forest ecosystem, endangered species and wildlife in general. Ideal for families, this fascinating educational tour is an ideal way to discover the island’s diverse flora and fauna during your holiday in St Lucia without enduring a long hike or drive.
