Sian Ka'an

Duration: Half Day

sian ka'an

Located near the Mayan ruins of Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Sian Kaan is the largest protected area in Mexico. This huge natural Biosphere Reserve is approximately 1.3 million acres in size and runs parallel to the second longest Reef in the world. Sian Kaan has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site as it possesses a unique topography consisting of tropical forests, mangroves, coral reefs and marshes containing a wide variety of wildlife. In addition this incredible place is also home to several archaeological sites with relics up to 2,300 years old. The name Sian Kaan translates from Mayan to “where the sky is born” or “gift from the sky” and on this tour you will have an exceptional opportunity to experience this heavenly place.

An exploration across the lagoon to the mangrove can bring you close to the viewing of animals like the Roseate spoonbills, Ibis, Tri-coloured heron, Jabiru, Jaguars, Deers, Manatees, Crocodiles and Monkeys. A snorkelling trip on the reef will give you the chance to view the beautiful underwater world of marine life. See common species like the spiny lobster, tarpon, grouper, permit, nurse shark, hammerhead, black tipped shark and snapper. You will also have the chance to spot a good amount of bird species endemic to the Yucatan area, and in this way our tour provides an exclusive opportunity to enjoy one of nature’s most exclusive treasures.

Perfect for all true nature lovers Sian Kaan is inhabited by 103 mammal species and over 1200 vascular plants. It is an ideal place for bird watching with about 336 bird species to entertain you with their gracious fluttering and flying by. But yet another unexpected surprise will be for you to learn that here you will also find the nesting grounds for two endangered sea turtle species. The well trained, knowledgeable and friendly guides will guide you on an informative and enjoyable tour though the rainforest where you will learn about common medicinal and edible plants (learn their Mayan names as well).

Spot popular birds like the Canivet’s emerald hummingbird, the Yucatan vireo, the common Tody Fly catcher, the Rufous Necked wood rail or the Brown Booby. This bilingual tour through the Sian Kaan will give you the chance to learn not only about the remarkable landscape, flora and fauna of the place but also about the unique Mayan cultures that inhabited the peninsula for ages.
