rio lagartos and ek balam

Ok nature lovers here is another one for you! The Rio Lagartos & Ek Balam excursion is an added bonus because it offers a wonderful combination of an eco tour with history and culture. At Rio Lagartos you can enjoy viewing majestic wildlife in their natural habitat before taking a journey back in time to the Mayan ruins of Ek Balam where you can to learn about Mayan culture. For the next three hours you will experience an adventure of a lifetime. We will depart from Playa del Carmen and set off on a journey across the northern portion of Yucatan Peninsula. Feel the cool Caribbean breeze as we cruise towards our first destination.

Upon arrival at the heart of the Biosphere Reserve of Rio Lagartos among thick mangroves filled with treasures to be discovered you will be transferred unto tour boats. These boats are small so you will board each of them in limited groups which will also maximise your viewing pleasure. Everyone on board shall be able to take pictures and / or film so remember to bring along those cameras because this tour provides a one of a kind photographic safari.

As you are guided through the canals you can observe several species of birds and other kinds of wildlife that inhabit the reserve. View animals such as crocodiles, cranes, gray and white pelicans, ibises, herons and without a doubt one of the main attractions, the beautiful pink flamingos. After admiring the brilliant pink colour of these wonderful birds you will be further amazed by the sight of pink lakes. Yes pink lakes! These lakes extend for approximately 12 miles and its pink colour adds a lovely dash of colour to the landscape.

We stop for a delicious lunch with the natural ambiance offered by the beautiful scenery. The meal is a succulent seafood inspired preparation however there will be options for the non-seafood eaters so don’t worry.

The journey continues one of the Mayan archaeological wonders. The Ek Balam site is extremely tranquil as it is visited less often than other sites that are the hosts of mass tourism. Hidden in the jungle this archaeological site still shows stucco carvings and original statues in pristine condition. The most important cultural period at Ek Balam occurred during 700 – 1000 A.D.
