Jamaica Dogsled Tour

Duration: 90 Minutes

jamaica dogsled tour

Dog sledding is probably the last activity to spring to mind during a holiday in Jamaica, but this is exactly what you will be doing on this tour. Enjoy the beautiful Caribbean scenery as you race through the countryside in the sunshine, led by a team of trusty dogs. No snow is required – this tour is truly unique.

There are many ways to explore Jamaica but dog sledding has to be the most unusual. Starting from Ocho Rios, this traditional snow-bound sport will alternatively take you across dry land as you embark on a spirited adventure into the countryside on wheels instead of snow!

Your day will begin with an introduction to the Jamaica Dogsled Team, which was started in 2005 by Danny Melville, owner of Chukka Caribbean Adventures. After stumbling across a dryland cart for training sled dogs whilst looking for dune buggies, he was inspired to form Jamaica’s first dogsled team. Enjoy a private tour of the kennels, where you will meet new canine friends such as Chukka, Marbles, Jimmy and Bruno. Hear the amazing stories behind the lives of the dogs, many of which have been rescued from the cruel Jamaican streets by the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. These dogs are very well looked after and now compete in events and races all over the U.S. and Canada thanks to their excellent care and training. You can gain hands-on experience on the tour as you assist the keepers with the harnessing of the team before your journey.

Once onboard the sled, your Musher (driver) and experienced dogsled team will eagerly lead you through the lush Jamaican countryside where film history has been made. Ride along Papillion Cove, where actor Steve McQueen performed his famous cliff dive in the 1973 movie ‘Papillion’. Next we visit the beautiful locations where Return to Treasure Island and Passion and Paradise were filmed.

We stop on the way for refreshments, using the chance to capture memories of the day by taking photos with your faithful companions. Returning to the kennels, you can reward your team with treats for a job well done. This tour provides a wonderful opportunity to support the valuable work of the Jamaica Dogsled Team whilst having the trip of a lifetime.
