Greenwood Great House, Martha Brae Rafting and Dunns River Falls

Duration: Half Day

Greenwood Great House, Martha Brae Rafting and Dunns River Falls

Travel off the beaten track during your holiday in Jamaica and discover some of the island’s most beautiful architectural and natural treasures. This tour will lead you to Greenwood Great House before taking you on a relaxing rafting trip down the scenic Martha Brae River. Last but not least, you will also visit the enchanting Dunns River Falls near Ocho Rios. This memorable excursion is the ideal way to explore rural Jamaica.

Departing from Montego Bay, the first stop of the tour is the parish of St James, where we will visit Greenwood Great House. This beautiful plantation house is regarded as the finest antique museum in the Caribbean and the greatest Great House in Jamaica. The building was once the home of the Barrett family and is an excellent example of late 18th century architecture in Jamaica. Despite being built during a turbulent period in Jamaica’s history, this is one of the only houses to escape unscathed from the bloody slave rebellion of the 1830s, at a time when wealthy plantation owners lived in luxury due to the profits of slave labour on the sugar plantations. Inside you will see an extensive collection of antique furniture, as well as paintings, musical instruments and rare books, some of which date back from as early as 1697.

Your tour continues as we make our way to the legendary Martha Brae River, one of the most scenic and well-known waterways in Jamaica. Here you will take a leisurely trip down the river onboard a 30ft carved bamboo raft. Your journey will be guided by an experienced “captain” who will reveal the history and legends of the area whilst pointing out the endemic flora and fauna along the riverside. Marvel at the captivating scenery as you float gently past river banks covered with dense tropical forest and other exotic vegetation such as giant mango, breadfruit, and calabash trees. This tranquil ecosystem offers one of the best places for nature watching in Jamaica as wildlife is abundant.

We then drive onwards to the Dunns River Falls, one of Jamaica's most famous waterfalls. Considered one of the island’s most beautiful national treasures, this magnificent waterfall is one of the most photographed sites in Jamaica, having been featured in the first James Bond film Dr No in 1962, and in countless other films since. Starting from the white sandy beach at the base of the falls, visitors can climb 600ft to the top of Dunns River Falls, led by experienced guides. On the way up you can stop and take photos or take a refreshing swim in the natural plunge pools, surrounded by lush green tropical rainforest. This is the perfect end to the day as you enjoy relaxation and rejuvenation in paradise surroundings.
