Private Heritage Beach Horse Ride

Duration: Half Day

Private Heritage Beach Horse Ride

There are numerous ways to get off the beaten track during your holiday in Jamaica and discover the island’s exquisite natural beauty, but horseback riding has to be one of the most exciting. If you are an experienced rider, this private tour is ideal because it has been customized to enable clients to ride at a faster pace. Explore beautiful wooded areas and beaches on the North Coast, riding past ruined castles and ancient sugar factories on the way. This equestrian adventure in paradise is an experience not to be missed.

Your private tour begins with a visit to Seville Great House and Heritage Park, one of Jamaica's most important cultural heritage sites. The site has been occupied since prehistoric times when the indigenous Taino Indians arrived on the island from Venezuela. Archeological remains can be seen here, as well as relics relating to the Africans and Europeans that arrived and settled in Jamaica afterwards. Seville Heritage Park is the site of Sevilla la Neuva (New Seville), the first Spanish settlement on the island and one of the first in the New World in the 16th century.

Visitors can see the ruins of an ancient Spanish church, Spanish fortified castle (Governor's House) and a Spanish artisan workshop here. After the English successfully captured the island from the Spanish shortly afterwards, the property was developed as a sugar estate during the 17th century. Seville Great House was later built in 1745 when the island’s sugar industry was booming. The plantation house originally had two floors until the upper floor was damaged by a hurricane. Having being restored, the house now exhibits a wealth of historical artifacts relating to the area's history and culture.

English colonial relics include the ruins of an old sugar mill, a water wheel, copra kiln and boiling house. The surrounding grounds are perfect for picnics and relaxation, and horseback riding is particularly popular for the adventurous. After mounting your horse, you can ride through the park and learn all about the deep-rooted history behind archeologists’ excavations.

Your journey will eventually lead you to a beautiful sandy beach, where you can relax and taste some of the local produce before heading to the sea for a refreshing horseback ride through the waves. On your return, you can canter gently along the deserted beach looking out for birds and other wildlife on the way before riding through lush mangroves that hide the remains of an 18th century warehouse and a waterwheel that once powered the sugar mill on this former plantation. This memorable tour is an idyllic way to discover the early history and culture of one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands.
