Puerto Plata City Tour

Duration: Half Day

puerto plata city tour

Puerto Plata is a legendary city oozing old charm and romanticism in the form of many historical sites, the most important of which you will be able to get know and explore on this fantastic city tour. As well as being a first class resort offering tourists every kind of possible entertainment, Puerto Plata is a place of little colonial wonders where you can travel through time by just passing through its oldest streets.

Find out the reason behind this city being called the “Silver Port” and explore the vicinity’s quaint little places and the old colonial glamour present in the historical part of the city centre. Discover the wonders of this city, famous for its Victorian architecture and founded in 1502 by Columbus himself.

Begin with a visit to the Amber Museum, famous for being the inspiration to the creation of the film Jurassic Park. Learn about the origins of amber, a semi-precious gem that is found in many varieties  around the world and of which the Dominican version is considered to be the most transparent and thus one of the most interesting to look at.

Visit the oldest fortress in the island, the Fort of San Felipe and discover the mystic allure surrounding this legendary fort. Originally built to protect Puerto Plata from the attacks of invaders and pirates, its construction under the order of King Felipe II who gave it its name was completed in 1507. Its strategic location on a hill and overlooking the ocean also makes of this fortress an imposing sight that perfectly adorns and blends in with the landscape of the city.

You will then continue to visit the “Brugal” rum factory, where you will be given a tour around the place so that you can see the various stages in the preparation of one of the best rums produced in the Dominican Republic…find out the real reason behind Dominicans always being so happy!

Finish off the day with some fabulous shopping and engage in some major fun whilst bartering with the locals for the best bargains to take home…then take your time to refresh with a peaceful stroll down the quaint Central Park, a lively place just by the cathedral.

This discovery tour around the city of Puerto Plata will give all holidaymakers a real feel of the culture and history of this fabulous city that, as you’ll learn on this excursion, is so much more than just another charming Dominican holiday resort.
