Saona Island and Altos De Chavon
Duration: Full Day
This is a must excursion for all those holidaying in Punta Cana, Juan Dolio or Santo Domingo! A tour like this is the perfect way to make the most of your holiday in this southern region of the Dominican Republic.
This wonderful excursion will begin with a morning flight to La Romana, a city located at the southern part of the island and one of the country's most beautiful holiday resorts. It is precisely in this city that you will find one of the most precious and rarest treasures of the Dominican Republic, a mini-medieval town recreated in true 16th century style. Altos del Chavón stands as a unique replica of an old southern European village, highly contrasting with the rest of the Dominican Republic and considered as something of an oddity in the island. You will be strolling along this magnificent recreated town that seems to have been magically transported to this location all the way from an ancient village from Spain. Set in a beautiful hillside location above La Romana, this small town is full of detail and character that enchants visitors time and time again.
After this encounter with history and old charm, for the second part of this tour you will be taken to Saona Island, a mini tropical paradise a short distance away from south-eastern Dominican mainland. Travelling to this island of sun and seclusion is a treat you shouldn't miss on your Dominican Republic holiday...an amazing indulgence for your senses! As a government protected nature reserve, this place exudes exoticness and is famous for the beauty of its beaches; having been used by many film-makers as the idyllic location to recreate a “desert island”. This was the location chosen to film a famous Bounty advert!
A visit here during your Dominican Republic holiday is something you simply cannot miss!! Whilst the trip to the island itself is an exciting boat adventure, the waters surrounding this small island are teeming with rich wildlife, offering an amazing opportunity for fantastic snorkeling. Spend your time at leisure in this island full of natural treasures and wild beauties. Swim and sunbathe against a lively background of merengue, salsa, volleyball nets and an open bar followed up by a fine barbeque/buffet lunch that will indulge your palate with a fine selection of seafood.
And for the finishing touch to the day's exciting adventures, on your way back you will be stopping at a natural pool, a special area where the waters are clearer and shallower, only waist high and the best of it all is that the area is full of beautiful starfish!
