This tour will take you to the popular beach resort of Playa Dorado on the Dominican’s north coast. Meaning “golden beach” in Spanish, Playa Dorada is one of the most popular beach resorts on the north coast. Extending from Cofresi to Nagua, this beautiful stretch of Atlantic coastline is famously known as the Amber Coast due to its rich deposits of semi-precious amber.

The region is famous for hosting miles of golden sandy beaches and spectacular scenery, and is one of the Dominican’s most scenic holiday destinations. The lush tropical forests and mountains and provide a wide range of activities for adventure sports enthusiasts, whilst the beaches and sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean attract those looking for both relaxation and excellent water sports facilities. Snorkeling, diving, windsurfing and kite surfing are just some of the options available here.

A large number of seaside towns and beach resorts are dotted along the coastline, and the Playa Dorada complex is one of the largest. Aside from its beaches, the resort offers bars, restaurants, cinemas and a shopping mall, where you can buy everything from cigars and rum to jewellery and beachwear. If you are looking for cheaper prices and something a bit more unique, however, a visit to the Orange Market is a must.

Situated right on the beach at Playa Dorado, the Orange Market is a series of shops located in brightly-painted orange huts, so it would be hard to miss! This is great place to visit to buy some unique gifts and souvenirs at significantly lower prices that the shopping malls. A variety of local products can be bought here, including Dominican coffee, rum and vanilla, in addition to beautiful handcrafted items, handmade jewellery and island music on CDs. All prices are marked up to show their actual value, but haggling is expected from the vendors so don’t be shy. Make the most of it and grab a bargain!

Multi-million dollar project to restore beaches in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Ministry of Tourism has announced it will improve a number of beaches across the country over the next two-and-a-half years. ACCIONA Infrastructure will carry out the work as part of the project that will cost USD $64 million and will see 13 beaches upgraded in seven towns, including Cabeza de Toro, Macao and Arena Gorda-Cortecito beaches in Punta Cana.
