Holguin Province is a beautiful mountainous region located in eastern Cuba. It was here, in the Cayos de Bariay, that Christopher Columbus landed in October 27th, 1492. He was amazed by the rich vegetation, warm climate and beautiful coastline calling it "the most beautiful land human eyes had ever seen". The capital city Holguin is the international gateway to the province. It features historic buildings, grand plazas and monuments and a popular activity in Holguin is to take a walk up the 460 steps of Loma de la Cruz for views over the whole city. Holguin Province features 22 sheltered bays and countless white-sand beaches. Guardalavaca is the most popular beach resort in the province; it offers idyllic beaches, world-class diving and popular hotels - the perfect spot for a beach holiday in Cuba. The nearby Bahia de Naranjo Nature Park houses an aquarium where seals and dolphins put on a lively show and visitors can swim with dolphins. To the east of the province you will find Bahia de Nipe, the largest bay in Cuba and the home of the Cayo Saetia Nature Reserve, a paradise of virgin beaches and exotic flora and fauna.
