Sarchi Artisan Workshop and Famous Oxcart Factory
Duration: Half Day
When you think about a holiday in Costa Rica, you usually imagine beautiful white-sand beaches, rainforest treks, exotic wildlife, active volcanoes and breathtaking scenery. Souvenirs and local crafts are probably the last thing on your mind. But this tour, which takes you to the picturesque town of Sarchi and the famous Oxcart Factory, should definitely be added to your list of things to do.
Located in the Central Valley, less than an hour’s drive from San Jose, Sarchi is the craft capital of Costa Rica. Rich in artisan history, Sarchi has a number of workshops, which produce thousands of items carved from the fine tropical hardwoods, revealing beautiful, traditional handiwork that attracts Ticos and tourists alike. Look out for beautiful textiles, and elaborately painted bowls, trays and furniture, including rocking chairs, table and chests − all of which reflect the local Costa Rican culture and natural surroundings.
The famous brightly painted oxcarts can also be found here, which vary in colour, shape and size. This is Costa Rica’s most famous type of handicraft and is a very old tradition that has been reproduced all over the country. Watch the local artisans as they decorate the oxcarts and other furniture with bright, colourful designs. Once used to transport coffee beans over the mountains to the coast, the oxcarts are a symbol of Costa Rican cultural history, and are still made by using traditional methods today.
On route to Sarchi, you will travel past rolling hills, country farms and coffee and sugar cane plantations, and through small, quaint towns like Grecia, with its unique dark red metal church − Cathedral de la Mercedes.
Sarchi is the ideal place to visit as you near the end of your holiday in Costa Rica. Appreciate true Costa Rican craftsmanship and take home a selection of beautiful souvenirs and gifts for friends and family.
What to bring: Sun block, walking shoes, camera and hat. Length of tour: Half Day.
