Arenal Volcano National Park and Hot Springs

Duration: Half Day

arenal volcano national park and hot springs

This tour of Costa Rica will take you around the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, past tranquil towns and through fascinating cloud forest – revealing stunning vistas along the way. Eventually you will reach the rolling plains of San Carlos, dominated by the majestic Arenal Volcano. A perfect conical shape, Arenal Volcano is famous for its incredible regular eruptions, glowing lava streams and incandescent red hot molten rock explosions, which resemble a spectacular natural firework display at night. Arenal Volcano was previously believed to have been dormant, until a major eruption took place in 1968. Today, it is the most active volcano in Costa Rica, and one of the most active in the world.

Arenal Volcano National Park lies within the Arenal Conservation Area, which protects eight of Costa Rica's 12 life zones and 16 protected reserves in the region between the Guanacaste and Tilarán mountain ranges, including Lake Arenal, the largest artificial lake in Costa Rica. Here, you can explore the volcanic trails and forest walks, which lead to breathtaking waterfalls and canopy walks on the greener sides of the volcano. An abundance of wildlife can be found here, within different ecosystems made up of perennial wet forests, primary cloud forest and rainforest, woodlands, rivers, waterfalls and hot springs. Numerous species of fish, reptiles and mammals live in these diverse habitats. Look out for tortoises, snakes and lizards, and an amazing number of bird species, which make this park a birdwatcher's paradise.

A second, smaller volcano − Chato – can also be found within the park.  Dormant for around 3,500 years, the collapsed crater contains a picturesque, emerald lagoon which is surrounded by forest.

On this tour, we will also visit the natural Tabacón Hot Springs, which is an ideal way to relax and enjoy spectacular views of the volcano, set amongst beautiful tropical gardens. Bathe in these natural, spring-fed pools, which are packed with minerals and heated naturally by Arenal Volcano. The pools vary in temperature, the hottest reaching 102°F. 97% rain-based and 3% magma-based, the Tabacón Hot Springs are believed to have numerous health benefits, including improving skin problems, arthritis and muscular pains. A trip to Arenal Volcano National Park is an awe-inspiring highlight of any holiday to Costa Rica.

What to Bring: Swimsuit, towel, cool comfortable clothes and shoes, light jacket and sun block. Length of tour: Full day.
