Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Duration: Half Day

poas volcano and la paz waterfall gardens

This tour begins as you depart from San Jose and ascend 5000 feet towards the Poas Volcano (8,200 feet), an active volcano and one of the most spectacular in Costa Rica. It is also the largest accessible volcanic crater in the world, where you can literally stand on the edge and look down into the stunning turquoise lagoon below. The larger crater is active, and has small but frequent geyser-type eruptions of mud and steam. However, the last major eruptions occurred between 1952 and 1954. Follow the walking trails through fascinating forests and discover Botos, a beautiful cold green water lake that fills a smaller, inactive crater. It hasn’t erupted for about 7,500 years. Watch the steam as it spurts from various volcanic vents.

Surrounded by lush cloud forest, this area is home to a diverse range of bird species, including hummingbirds, emerald toucanets, the famous resplendent quetzals and the clay-coloured robin, Costa Rica's national bird. Look out for the unique Poas yellow-green squirrel as well, which can only be found in this natural park.

After this trip, you will then continue onwards to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where you will find towering waterfalls, butterflies, hummingbirds and both cloud and rain forest. The highlight of the tour is a walk along the paved trails, which invite visitors to view, photograph and experience the power of five spectacular waterfalls from platforms provided. You will also find an exotic Orchid Garden and a living frog museum, which houses a unique collection of frog species native to Central America, including the red-eyed tree frog, flying frog, poison dart frog and green leaf frog. Throughout the gardens you will also find monkeys, rescued wild cats, snakes, a trout lake, an aviary and an aquarium.

Discover the wonders of Costa Rica’s native wildlife in these two unique areas. This tour is truly unforgettable.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes and clothes, light jacket, sunglasses, hat, sun block, rain coat, binoculars and camera. Length of tour: Full day
