Poas Volcano and River Expedition

Duration: Half Day

poas volcano and river expedition

This tour starts in San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, where you will travel onwards to the spectacular Poas Volcano National Park, one of the most bio-diverse natural parks in the country. Stand on the edge of the largest accessible crater in the world, and view the spectacular wildlife as you walk along trails that will take you into the cloud forest and amongst other fascinating ecosystems. Pass quaint villages and coffee plantations on the way to the park, and take in the beautiful Costa Rican vistas.

After your visit to Poas Volcano, you will continue to La Paz Waterfall Gardens for breakfast. Here you can enjoy a short visit to the Butterfly Farm and the Hummingbird Garden, which holds over 24 different types of hummingbirds. Watch them feeding and learn all about their life spans and habits. Stroll along the paved trails and discover the five magnificent waterfalls that lie within these beautiful gardens.

The journey then continues to Puerto Viejo Sarapiqui where you board a comfortable boat for a relaxing trip into the heartland of the rainforest. During this exciting river expedition, look out for a wide array of local wildlife, including toucans, monkeys, otters, turtles, iguanas, caimans, sloths, America crocodiles and many other tropical species that thrive within the rainforest ecosystem.

After a delicious, typical Costa Rican lunch, you will return to San Jose, passing through Braulio Carrillo National Park, a tropical treasure that has a huge expanse of virgin forest and wonderful flora and fauna. The park also has a number of prominent geological features, including the Barva Volcano, Patria River, Hondura River and the Sucio River, which is also known as the “Dirty River” because of it orange-brown colour, due to mineral deposits from the Irazú Volcano.

This tour is perfect for nature lovers who want to see as much diversity as they can during their holiday in Costa Rica.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes and clothes, Light jacket, sunglasses, hat, sun block, raincoat, binoculars, and camera.
