Getting Around
There’s a bus service from Grantley Adams airport but its easiest to take a registered taxi or ask your hotel to arrange a car. All the major hotels are beachside, and as so much entertainment is hotel-based, most tourists don’t bother with car hire. Good tour operators sell day trips to key attractions, check with your hotel for a reputable firm and you can often get a special price.
The Bathsheba Beach
From the bright white expanses of soft, sugary sand on the west coast to the south coast's rugged, surf-friendly shores, the glorious beaches of Barbados do not disappoint! And the beach bars are pretty famous as well! Don’t forget to enjoy a rum punch with a good book while looking out over the crystal clear, turquoise waters. The main resorts in the west of the island have beautiful golden sandy bays to enjoy.
Watersports
The island of Barbados is a water-lover's paradise. Once you've skimmed the water on a windsurf or kite board, paddled along the coast in a kayak or hopped on a laugh-a-minute banana boat ride, why not relax on a catamaran cruise? From pirate ships to sail boats, these group day trips are great fun. Hop aboard and sail along the coast sipping a cocktail or two and enjoy a well-prepared lunch, snorkelling and lots of Caribbean flavour from the friendly crews. Go for a Submarine Tour
The Caribbean is one of the most amazing places to scuba dive and snorkel and many boat tours also take you to sites where you can swim with turtles in the wild. Not a fan of diving? Don’t like sea water? Not to worry, Barbados has submarine tours that allow you to view tropical fish, corals and shipwrecks without getting wet! Enjoy the experience either by day or night, with the romantic night-time submarine trip focusing on the stunning colours of the corals and lesser spotted tropical fish, followed by a drinks reception afterwards.
Barbados Golf Club
Barbados is regarded as having some of the best championship golf courses in the Caribbean and with its spectacular weather and stunning scenery, it’s an ideal place to enjoy a round or two almost any time of year. The championship greens of Barbados Golf Club and Rockley Golf Course and Ape's Hill will keep you busy and test your abilities while the exclusive Sandy Lane hotel has no less than three designer courses on offer on the west coast.
Try Fish Cakes and Conkies
Barbados is famous for its fine dining and lively party atmosphere and is often frequented with sun-loving celebrities. For fancy dinners and amazing sunsets check out Champers, Tides or The Cliff for that special occasion. If you’re looking for a lively night out, put on your dancing shoes ann head down to the St Lawrence Gap area where you’ll find a safe, pedestrian area full of quality restaurants, bars and music.
Swim in the Paynes Bay
Swimming with turtles off the shores of Barbados has to be one of your holiday must-dos. Not far off the coast you can snorkel with bales of turtles, some of which will be older than you! Most tours also take you to shipwrecks and secluded beaches for more idyllic snorkelling. With crystal clear sea the temperature of your bath at home this is a truly breathtaking experience suitable for all beach lovers!
Visit Kensington Oval
Cricket is the national sport of Barbados and if you're travelling during the season, make your way to the world-famous Kensington Oval. Catch international test matches, one-day internationals or local first division matches and you’re sure to enjoy the lively atmosphere and be swept along by the national love for the game. Many famous West-Indies players hail from Barbados so take time to visit the neighbouring Legends of Barbados Cricket Museum.
Mount Gay Rum Experience
A trip to the Mount Gay Visitor Experience is a must for rum lovers. Mount Gay Rum is the oldest rum in the world dating back to 1703! Each of the three tours of the distillery will relay the rich history and let you in on the secrets of its signature drink - not forgetting a few tastings thrown in too, of course!
