The Bahamas: ideal for a romantic break

There are few more romantic destinations than the Caribbean and the Bahamas is one of the most wonderful places for loved-up couples. One of the best things about going on holiday in the Bahamas is the variety of things to see and do - so no matter what you both enjoy, you'll find somewhere that's just perfect.

From the vibrant Nassau and Paradise Island to the secluded Abacos and exotic Exumas archipelago, there really is something for everyone in the Bahamas. What's more, there are some top-quality hotels, resorts and other accommodation - like eco-lodges - that will make your holiday all the more special.

So, whether your idea of the perfect romantic trip is lounging on an empty beach with your partner soaking up the sun, trying adventurous activities together or enjoying the sights and sounds of a new city, a holiday in the Bahamas will tick all of your boxes.

Where to go for a peaceful break

If you're keen to escape from the stresses and strains of everyday life, the Bahamas is perfect - you won't find it hard to leave your troubles behind once you arrive. There are some outstanding beaches and other natural attractions here, but if you're looking for seclusion and romance it's hard to beat the Exumas Islands.

Here, there's the main island of Great Exumas, which is surrounded by more than 300 cays - ideal spots to seek out deserted stretches of sand. There are luxurious resorts, too, where your every need will be taken care of.

Make the most of your stay by hopping on a boat to explore some of the outlying cays - don't forget to take snorkelling equipment with you to enjoy the beautiful scenery beneath the water, as well as those above. One of the top sights in the area is the Thunderball Caves, which featured in two Bond movies.

The Abacos Islands are another wonderful choice for couples who want to get away from it all. There are some incredibly luxurious hotels here, where you'll have all the facilities you could want on hand to make your break a truly special one.

Adventurous activities for couples

If you and your partner love trying new things and being active on your holidays together then the Bahamas has lots to offer you. If you're keen to discover more of the stunning marine life or the coastline, head to Andros. This is where you can admire the world's third-largest barrier reef, swim in stunning blue holes and kayak along peaceful shorelines.

This is also a wonderful place to have a go at scuba diving, giving you the opportunity to try something completely new with your loved one - a memorable experience for those with a sense of adventure. In fact, there are many places in the Bahamas that are fantastic for diving, including the Exumas and the Abacos.

Another option for couples looking for some thrills and spills is to learn to surf or go on a ‘surfari' - this involves discovering hidden corners of the islands while also looking for some great breaks where you can catch a few waves. This is a brilliant way to escape the crowds and really enjoy some quality time with your partner.

Make the most of the Bahamas' attractions

If, on the other hand, you and your partner love being in the thick of the action when you go away, base yourselves in Nassau or Paradise Island. These are two of the Bahamas' most popular holiday destinations and are bursting with fun things to see and do - as well, of course, as fantastic beaches.

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas and it's where you'll find a wide variety of excellent restaurants, bars and nightclubs - perfect if you're after a few evenings out during your trip. There are also some brilliant shopping opportunities here, not to mention fascinating historical sites, so it's a wonderful all-round destination.

Paradise Island is easily accessible from Nassau, and is home to a range of high-end resorts - ideal for a romantic getaway. There are beautiful beaches, such as Montagu Beach and Cabbage Beach, as well as excellent water sports facilities. Regular boat trips also run from here to some of the uninhabited cays nearby, so you can escape the crowds if you want some time alone together.

New plans for Baha Mar mega resort in Bahamas

The failed Baha Bar mega resort in the Bahamas has been given a new lease of life after the Bahamas government and the Export-Import Bank of China recently signed an agreement. The contract states that construction of the resort will be completed and then sold to a "world-class" hotel group. Construction is scheduled to start in September and the new resort could open before the end of the 2016/2017 high season.
