Morocco for couples
Morocco is a wonderful place for a romantic break
A holiday in Morocco may not be the first thing you think of when you're considering a romantic break, but this stunning north African country is the ideal place for a getaway for two. One of the best things about Morocco is the variety on offer here, with so much to see and experience.
Whether you and your partner are looking for amazing beaches, fascinating history, vibrant culture, luxurious hotels or a combination of all of these, you can tailor your holiday in Morocco to suit you. There's something truly romantic about walking hand in hand, wandering the narrow streets of the souks and medinas that you'll find in many of the country's historic cities, or watching the sunset from one of the gorgeous beaches.
If you've got romance in mind, make sure you book a luxurious hotel in Morocco for your break - there are some wonderful, intimate riads (traditional Moroccan guesthouses) that are ideal if you want a bit of seclusion and a taste of the local culture all rolled into one.
Romance in the sun
Morocco has a largely Mediterranean climate, with plenty of sunshine particularly in the summer. In fact, Agadir, which is on the coast, experiences some 300 days of sun every year - so you're almost guaranteed good weather if you make this a stop on your romantic getaway. It's actually a brilliant place for couples for visit, as there are few better things to do with your loved one than take a stroll along a golden beach before settling down to watch the sunset.
Delving into at least one of Morocco's cities is another must for couples keen to explore every side of the country together, with Marrakech being one of the most popular places to discover. The fantastic thing about this city is its contrast between old and new - the medina and Djemaa el Fna Square feel like they've come out of the pages of an Arabian Nights story, while the upmarket Gueliz district has a strong colonial feel. It was created by the French when they occupied the nation and is home to some stunning buildings and attractions, such as the charming Majorelle Gardens.
Casablanca, which is best known for its association with the Hollywood movie of the same name, is another excellent spot for couples in search of romance. Its beach is beautiful, there's a chic marina and various pavement cafes where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy each other's company.
Adventurous couples will love having the opportunity to really immerse themselves in a new culture, something that is easy to do in one of Morocco's vibrant cities. Head to one of the old medinas and you'll discover a maze of streets and alleys that lead you from one souk to the next, past workshops and tucked-away riads. Fez is one of the best places to see traditional craftsmen at work, while the street performers in Marrakech put on unforgettable shows every day.
There are many fascinating historical and cultural sites dotted across Morocco as well, with beautiful mosques, unique medersas, striking forts and much more waiting to be discovered in the likes of Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez and Rabat.
You can also leave the cities behind to engage with some of Morocco's other communities, such as the Berbers who live in the High Atlas Mountains, or the Bedouins who have wandered the desert for centuries.
Making your holiday in Morocco memorable
There are some truly unforgettable experiences you can have in Morocco that will make your romantic holiday one to remember forever. Couples should certainly spend a night camping in the Sahara Desert, where the stars twinkle incredibly brightly overhead and there's a sense of complete tranquillity and seclusion. Enjoying a traditional Bedouin meal, complete with Bedouin tea, is a real must for the full experience.
Another essential Moroccan experience is visiting a spa, where a whole range of homemade treatments and therapies are on offer. Some of the riads have their own spas, which means you may not even need to leave your hotel in Morocco to feel thoroughly pampered and refreshed. Head to a hammam for a quintessentially Arabian treatment, or visit one of the more modern spas that offer the likes of thalassotherapy and balneotherapy.
