Getting Around
From the airport landing strip, you must use either boat or seaplane to reach your final destination. To get to Male you can catch a ferry – locally known as a dhoni. There are taxis in Male that are relatively cheap. Seaplanes are a great experience used to access atolls and speedboats are also an option.
There is no bus service in the Maldives – with the exception of the capital of Male where they were introduced in 2011. The dhoni boats are the sea-based equivalent and are very cheap to use.
Car hire isn’t required in the Maldives; some islands have minivans and golf buggies that can help you to get from A to B though, and Male has taxis and buses. Maldivians drive on the left-hand side.

Dry Season
Dry season, or high season, is great for when you need some winter sun.
There are two distinct seasons in the Maldives, with dry – or high – season taking place from December to April.
The weather is driest at this time of year, and the humidity is at its lowest. The islands are popular with holidaymakers looking to catch some winter sun – temperatures average at a steady 30 degrees, ideal for catching some rays during the day.
The combination of the beautiful weather and distance from any large land mass means that the Maldives have some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in the world, particularly in the dry season. So, it’s a great time to visit if you’re keen to see sea life and wish to explore the depths below.
