Getting Around

Taxis are one of the quickest, easiest and most reliable ways to get around Holguin, but be aware of scams or overcharging. Either jump into registered yellow taxis, seen throughout Cuba, or tick an item off the bucket list with a trip in a classic American car.

Climb Loma de la Cruz

For the best views of Holguin, there’s only one place to go - right to the top of the Hill of the Cross, or ‘Loma de la Cruz’, as it’s known locally. Situated to the north of Holguin city, there are two options: either hike up the 458 concrete steps or, alternatively, take the car up. Whichever option you choose, once you reach the very top you’ll be treated to marvellous views out over the city. Refreshments can be purchased from the hill-top cafe/bar, where well-deserved shade can also be sought. The hill is also home to a wooden cross, which is said to protect everyone who lives in the city.

Explore Holguin in a classic American car

Sure, you could head to one of the many museums in the city centre to learn more about Holguin’s vibrant past. But there’s no better way to absorb the region’s history than by jumping into a classic American car for a tour around the region’s key sites. There are only around 60,000 vintage cars left in Cuba, which are in themselves an emblem of a bygone era - before the Cuban revolution in the 1950s, these cars were traditionally driven by the country’s elite. Be sure to speak with your driver before you set off to make sure they’re happy to point out all of the key sights for you.
