No matter what kind of trip you’re after, Holguin, Cuba holidays will appeal to all members of the family.

Found to the east of the picturesque Caribbean island, around a 90-minute flight from Havana, Holguin is a colourful area that’s home to tropical forests, mountains and picture-perfect beaches. It comes with the highest of praises too - after catching his first glimpse of Holguin in 1492, Christopher Columbus called the area ‘the most beautiful land eyes have ever seen’. Today, holidays to Holguin, Cuba, continue to delight, with December through to May offering warm sea temperatures and the best chance for sunny, rain-free days.

The long stretches of coast are perfect for those who enjoy spending their getaway chilling on the beach, while day trips to the surrounding areas will keep ardent adventurers entertained. Explore the colonial architecture of Holguin city - Cuba’s fourth largest city - or head offshore to meet the sea-life in their natural habitat. The region is also full of delicious eateries, with restaurants offering a mix of Caribbean and traditional Cuba cuisine, while history lovers will lap up Provincial Museum of History. There’s plenty of shopping opportunities too; souvenir-hunters should head to the daily Guardalavaca craft market where there’s everything from homemade wooden crafts to clothing. Holguin, Cuba holidays tick all the boxes for families, friends and couples looking for a trip to remember.

Getting Around

Taxis are one of the quickest, easiest and most reliable ways to get around Holguin, but be aware of scams or overcharging. Either jump into registered yellow taxis, seen throughout Cuba, or tick an item off the bucket list with a trip in a classic American car.

Climb Loma de la Cruz

For the best views of Holguin, there’s only one place to go - right to the top of the Hill of the Cross, or ‘Loma de la Cruz’, as it’s known locally. Situated to the north of Holguin city, there are two options: either hike up the 458 concrete steps or, alternatively, take the car up. Whichever option you choose, once you reach the very top you’ll be treated to marvellous views out over the city. Refreshments can be purchased from the hill-top cafe/bar, where well-deserved shade can also be sought. The hill is also home to a wooden cross, which is said to protect everyone who lives in the city.

Kick back and relax on the beaches

Holguin is no stranger to picturesque beaches; in fact, there’s one for almost every week of the year! The white sands and crystal clear waters of Playa Esmeralda regularly earn it praise for being one of the most perfect in all of the Caribbean, while Guardalavaca’s beach has everything within a short distance away, including hotel resorts, cafes and restaurants. Also nearby is Playa Pesquero, which is a favourite for those who enjoy swimming in the sea and snorkelling. Some of the region’s hotels are also accessible via your resort, so bear this in mind before booking.
