Crystal-clear beaches, colourful historic buildings and family-friendly resorts - with all this and more on its doorstep, it’s no wonder that holidays to Holguin, Cuba, are so sought-after. It’s Cuba’s third most popular destination, with the average year-round temperatures regularly exceeding the 20°C mark. No matter what kind of trip you’re after, Holguin, Cuba holidays will appeal to all members of the family.

Found to the east of the picturesque Caribbean island, around a 90-minute flight from Havana, Holguin is a colourful area that’s home to tropical forests, mountains and picture-perfect beaches. It comes with the highest of praises too - after catching his first glimpse of Holguin in 1492, Christopher Columbus called the area ‘the most beautiful land eyes have ever seen’. Today, holidays to Holguin, Cuba, continue to delight, with December through to May offering warm sea temperatures and the best chance for sunny, rain-free days.

The long stretches of coast are perfect for those who enjoy spending their getaway chilling on the beach, while day trips to the surrounding areas will keep ardent adventurers entertained. Explore the colonial architecture of Holguin city - Cuba’s fourth largest city - or head offshore to meet the sea-life in their natural habitat. The region is also full of delicious eateries, with restaurants offering a mix of Caribbean and traditional Cuba cuisine, while history lovers will lap up Provincial Museum of History. There’s plenty of shopping opportunities too; souvenir-hunters should head to the daily Guardalavaca craft market where there’s everything from homemade wooden crafts to clothing. Holguin, Cuba holidays tick all the boxes for families, friends and couples looking for a trip to remember.

    Climb Loma de la Cruz

For the best views of Holguin, there’s only one place to go - right to the top of the Hill of the Cross, or ‘Loma de la Cruz’, as it’s known locally. Situated to the north of Holguin city, there are two options: either hike up the 458 concrete steps or, alternatively, take the car up. Whichever option you choose, once you reach the very top you’ll be treated to marvellous views out over the city. Refreshments can be purchased from the hill-top cafe/bar, where well-deserved shade can also be sought. The hill is also home to a wooden cross, which is said to protect everyone who lives in the city.

Holguin is no stranger to picturesque beaches; in fact, there’s one for almost every week of the year! The white sands and crystal clear waters of Playa Esmeralda regularly earn it praise for being one of the most perfect in all of the Caribbean, while Guardalavaca’s beach has everything within a short distance away, including hotel resorts, cafes and restaurants. Also nearby is Playa Pesquero, which is a favourite for those who enjoy swimming in the sea and snorkelling. Some of the region’s hotels are also accessible via your resort, so bear this in mind before booking.

Explore Holguin in a classic American car

Sure, you could head to one of the many museums in the city centre to learn more about Holguin’s vibrant past. But there’s no better way to absorb the region’s history than by jumping into a classic American car for a tour around the region’s key sites. There are only around 60,000 vintage cars left in Cuba, which are in themselves an emblem of a bygone era - before the Cuban revolution in the 1950s, these cars were traditionally driven by the country’s elite. Be sure to speak with your driver before you set off to make sure they’re happy to point out all of the key sights for you.

    Catch a baseball game

    Catch a baseball game

One of the most popular sports in Cuba is baseball - so it’s hardly surprising that Holguin city is home to its very own baseball stadium too. Calixto García Íñiguez Stadium is located in the heart of Holguin city, holding up to 30,000 spectators for every match. Entry to games starts as little as CUC$3 for foreign guests. Baseball season kicks off in August, and are worth a visit even if you have no prior baseball knowledge - games often have a carnival feel to them, with snacks and partying opportunities aplenty. Check online for dates, but it’s best to confirm with your hotel before you head off since the times can often change.
